Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was compelled to shut down for several hours when numerous of them floated into the airspace of Lithuania.
Air Travel Interruptions
The temporary shutdown led to the cancellation of 30 flights impacting 6,000 passengers, with officials warning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Border security stated that 25 meteorological balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with a pair of them ending up right above the aviation facility.
Approximately 14 of the meteorological devices deployed throughout the weekend floated over the metropolitan zone, which is the location of Lithuania's main urban center and close to the frontier with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
No fewer than 11 balloons containing eighteen thousand packages of illegal tobacco products have been collected so far, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to border security officials.
International Illegal Trade
Despite the disruption, authorities noted that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are not unusual in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
So far this year, numerous meteorological balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the border area of Poland, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than one hundred incidents in which illegal goods were transported from its border nation utilizing the meteorological equipment.
Criminal Methodology
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminal organizations employ a approach that remains particularly vulnerable to weather conditions rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by illegal traders - they are more economical than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Representatives further stated that "The objective of our agencies is to seize the largest possible volumes of smuggled items and to detain organisers and perpetrators so that such operations become not financially viable and present no risk to commercial air travel."
European Tensions
These airspace violations occur during a time of heightened tension in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have resulted in flight interruptions across the region.
Recent incidents in nearby states have caused EU officials to speed up talks about enhancing aerial security throughout European airspace.
