England along with Wales Drawn Together for RWC 2027 in Australia

Draw event for the 2027 tournament
The group draw was overseen by rugby icons such as two-time World Cup winner Dan Carter.

The English side and their Welsh counterparts find themselves placed in an identical pool for the 2027 RWC, setting up a major early encounter in the tournament Down Under. They are joined in Pool F by the Tongan Ikale Tahi and the Zimbabwean Sables.

This draw mirrors their famous clash in the pool stages of the 2015 tournament, where a Welsh win at Twickenham played a part in the hosts' shock group stage elimination.

Other Notable Group Pairings

Ireland and Scotland have likewise been drawn in a group once again, replicating the situation from the 2023 edition. On that occasion, Ireland secured a 36-14 win, with their opponents failing to advance to the knockout stages.

Uruguay and Portugal, both made a strong impression as surprise packages in the last World Cup, complete that same group.

Notably, the victors of both Pool D and Pool F are kept apart from holders and top-ranked South Africa until the final, assuming the South Africans top their own group.

Tournament Implications

Should the groups conclude according to the current global standings, further top favourites like New Zealand and Les Bleus would remain separated from both England and Ireland all the way to the final.

In that scenario, Argentina would be the other highly-seeded nation on that side of the elimination bracket as those northern hemisphere teams.

Tournament Hosts Face Blockbuster Fixture

Tournament hosts Australia have been drawn alongside their trans-Tasman rivals and triple champions the All Blacks in Pool A.

The Wallabies will kick off the tournament in Perth on 1 October 2027 in a blockbuster fixture designed to jump-start the event.

Elsewhere, reigning champions South Africa have drawn the Azzurri, the Lelos and the Oaks. France are grouped with Japan, 2031 hosts the United States and Manu Samoa.

Larger Tournament for 2027

Los Pumas will take on the Flying Fijians, Spain and Canada as the World Cup grows to twenty-four nations from the twenty who competed in 2023.

This edition will feature a round of 16 stage for the very first time in the competition's existence.

Although the victor of England and Wales's group may be kept apart from some of the game's biggest beasts early on, they will meet the runner-up from Pool B – most likely the Italians – in the last 16.

A total of four of the remaining six group winners will face a team that finished third from the initial group phase.
