Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Comments

The English opener Crawley suggested he was not familiar with comments from skipper Ben Stokes regarding the team environment as no place for "weak men".

Stokes made those words in several interviews following his team's defeat in the second Ashes versus Australia previously.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where England are staring at defeat with a match to spare, the captain stated he had allowed his message to "drift around" within the squad.

"I have completed all the talking over the past two days that I needed to have done," said the England leader.

However, after the opener scored a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the media with a pinch of salt," he added.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

Stokes issued his "weak men" observation after England were beaten in Brisbane to go two matches behind.

The team afterwards took a holiday to Noosa between the second and third matches.

Before the Adelaide contest, Stokes said his players had held "raw" conversations and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to remain alive in the series.

Yet, the Kent batsman asserted the guidance from the captain and coach Brendon McCullum had stayed in line with their previous three years in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, unchanged," noted Crawley. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. It felt like we were capable of something special entering this Test."

Australia Close of Rapid Series Victory

The opener's wicket late on Saturday came during a crucial three-wicket burst by Australian spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Harry Brook and Stokes himself – meant England six down for 207 chasing a daunting total of 435 runs.

This means, Australia need four wickets on Sunday's final day to move to an unassailable three-nil lead after three Tests.

Defeat will extend England's drought in this country to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth straight overseas Ashes series loss.

The current battle will be completed in just 11 days of cricket – after England fell the first two Tests in two and four days each.

The last time 1921, when the Australians sealed victory in England in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been determined more swiftly. The hosts have also won in 11 days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"This is disheartening," admitted the batsman. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel at this point."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we will definitely view it like that," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been tough. Australia is a very, very good team. It was always going to be tough touring here against them. They were the favourites coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Position In Question

Although the opener's innings in Adelaide probably answers doubts about his immediate future in the side, Ollie Pope appears under threat for his spot in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 runs in England's second knock on day four, extending his poor record versus Australia.

Across 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has never made a fifty and boasts an average of just 17.62.

Only one other English batsman since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has featured as many times in the top order in the Ashes and recorded a poorer average.

However, the opener said any notion Pope is being scrutinised comes from "you guys" – meaning the press – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," added Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has played some really good knocks. It is noise externally. There's no discussion like that regarding Pope in the camp," he finished.
