Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a combined operation targeting an underground arms cache in Syria employed by the IS group, per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The location, pinpointed through intelligence, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was located in mountains just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our fighter planes utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to target a series of access tunnels providing entry to the facility... early reports are that the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the attack late on Saturday and each participating jet returned safely, the ministry further stated.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

The Islamic State group - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - established militant control over significant areas in Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This operation underscores British leadership, and resolve to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to stamp out any revival of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary John Healey remarked.

British military aircraft have performed overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "prevent any attempted resurgence" of IS after its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of the UK armed forces involved in this operation for their expertise and their valour," the Defence Secretary commented. "They were among numerous British personnel on duty over the festive period. This operation, to remove dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our way of life, shows how British military are always on standby, throughout the year, protecting the UK domestically and strong abroad."

During December, the United States armed forces carried out what it described as a "major assault" targeting Daesh sites in Syria, subsequent to an attack killed two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The U.N. reports Daesh still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in Syria and Iraq.
